Cook about 1 lb. sliced fresh cultivated or wild mushrooms with 2 chopped onions sauteed in 3 T. lard, adding 2-3 T. water. Simmer on low heat under cover about 20 min., stirring occasionally. Uncover and allow excess moisture to steam away. Salt & pepper and serve over 4-5 c. cooked or canned drained navy beans. Season with several pinches savory or marjoram if desired. Note: This is a typical old peasant dish: simple, filling, and economical, especially since Polish country folk pick their own mushrooms in nearby fields and forests.
